Pick a thing or two that sums up how you're doing today, this week, in general, and tell me about it in the 5-7-5 syllables of a haiku.

The Dead Have No Use For AI

Physics doesn't care if you're rich.

Individuals cannot bribe or bunker their way out of being affected by climate change. Global-level problems need global-level solutions, and that means making international cooperation agreements that countries and corporations actually follow through on.

On a species level, we can actually survive without the internet. We really don't want to do without the internet, but history is proof we're quite capable of it. We can definitely survive without AI. We cannot survive without access to fresh water, food, and what's actually a remarkably narrow band of agreeable temperature, humidity, and oxygenation conditions, when you consider matters more galactically.

If we have to decide between feeding AI by watering data centers or feeding humans by watering agricultural crops, I hope we will make the wise choice. )

Exercise today: write the longest possible sentence (grammatically correct) in 5 minutes. I rather like what I came up with:

Once upon a time, back when the tigers smoked, as the Koreans say, at least according to a website I found the other day that talked about the way various cultures start their stories, there was a single dragon still living atop the white cliff hills of Dover, where bluebirds rarely fly despite a popular song indicating otherwise, and this dragon, the last of his kind, enjoyed looking out over the ocean, seeing the various colors of sky and sea, watching the antics of birds diving for fish or for mussels that they would then bring high into the sky so they could drop the shellfish onto the rocks below to break the armor of their shell and get to the salty goodness inside, a trick the dragon had never tried because the effort for him was not worth the scant mouthful of food he would get from it, so instead he lay still, basking in the weak sunlight and dreaming of the old days when the sky was full of dragons of all sizes and colors, from the tiny green ones flitting like hummingbirds to the larger bronze behemoths to, once, an old dragon the size and color of an active volcano.

Weird computer issue ahoy

My computer has been glitching the fuck out in the weirdest way.

For gaming, we use Foundry VTT for the "table", and discord voice chat; the DM video streams. I have one window for Foundry, one window for the google doc where I take notes, and discord off to the side so I can see the video (not necessary but fun) and unmute myself if I want to talk.

Last week, two minutes into gaming, it glitched.

Everything went black except for Foundry and the video stream from discord. No other windows visible, including discord. The mouse cursor vanished. I could still move the mouse and see mouseover effects, but I couldn't do anything. Alt-tab did nothing. Foundry and the video stream were updating live, I could see what was happening, but I couldn't /do/ anything.

I rebooted, went back into Foundry, and fairly quickly it broke again.

After gaming I checked for OS updates (none found), driver updates (none), browser updates (none), optional updates (one for the monitor). Installed with requisite rebooting. Poked a few things. Searched, but "everything but focus window goes black" doesn't seem to be a common thing; Foundry going black is a thing, but this is literally the opposite. I weeded out the bazillion tabs in case that was the issue

The day before gaming this week, I asked the DM to run the server for me so I could test, and everything was fine.

...five minutes into gaming, it did the same damn thing.

I did find out that if I could get the mouse in the right place I could right-click on discord, which would switch me to that window and the display would be normal. (But going back to the Foundry window would break it again.) I also was able to have the Foundry window maximized with no problems (but couldn't then see the video stream or notes) so I did ok, kinda.

After the session the DM stayed on with me to troubleshoot, except that I couldn't get it to break, even with the biggest map he had. He was still video streaming, I put the Foundry window in windowed mode, and everything behaved. I even tried playing a youtube video in a different window and it was fine.

So it ... only breaks with multiple people signed in??? or specifically only breaks Sundays 7pm-11pm Eastern??

How tf do I troubleshoot a problem that I can't replicate?

Dreamed that I was trying to protect someone close to me from someone who had preyed on them, but they were an adult and not cooperating with the protection. I was so mad and frustrated.

Therapist should probably hear about this.

My brain seems to have decided I don't need sleep. What.

For reference I normally "go to bed" (as in, close my eyes and try go to sleep) around 12:30, and "sleep" until 10:30 when my aide comes; it can take up to a few hours to actually get to sleep, and I wake up multiple times (especially in 2h intervals like 6am/8am).

I often put on a soundtrack as I'm going to sleep, partly to give my brain something to hold on to, partly to track sleep. Good nights, I'm asleep before the soundtrack ends. Some nights I go in and out, so I skip bits -- aware of tracks 1, 2, 3, 6, 9. Some nights I'm fully aware through the whole thing. If I feel too awake when the soundtrack ends I'll play something again, either the same set or something else.

Three nights ago, I was fully aware through the first soundtrack, and the second, and the third... Somewhere around 5:30am I switched to rain noise, so I wouldn't stress out too much about Not Getting Sleep. Sometime after 7 I fell asleep enough to dream, but I was awake again before 8.

Two nights ago, same thing but I got an hour or two around 6-8.

Last night, I "only" stayed awake through about 4:20... and then was awake again by 6. More sleep, awake by 7:30. A bit more sleep, then awake at 9:30, feeling groggy but unable to get back to sleep.

I have no idea wtf is going on.
